WeChat Pay Setup for Foreigners

WeChat Pay is the most widely accepted payment method in China (~99% of merchants). Since mid-2023, foreigners can link international cards (Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Diners Club, Discover, American Express, and UnionPay) directly — no Chinese bank account needed.

1

Install WeChat & Register

Download WeChat from App Store or Google Play. Register with your international phone number and verify via SMS code.

International numbers are fully supported for registration.
2

Enable WeChat Pay (Weixin Pay)

Go to Me > Settings > General > Tools > Weixin Pay and enable it. If you do not see this option, go to Me > Services > Wallet to activate.

You will set a 6-digit payment PIN during this step.
3

Complete Real-name Verification

Go to Me > Services > Wallet > ID Info. Submit your passport information and a clear photo of the passport photo page. Processing typically takes minutes to a few hours.

Use good lighting. No flash glare. All corners of the passport page must be visible.
4

Link Your International Card

Go to Me > Services > Wallet > Bank Cards > Add a Card. Enter your card details and complete SMS verification from your bank.

Your name on the card must match your passport name exactly.

5

Start Paying

Go to Me > Services > Money Code to display your payment QR code. Or use the Scan function to scan a merchant QR code.

Accepted at virtually every merchant in China — from luxury malls to street food stalls.

About Account Verification

When registering a new WeChat account, you may occasionally be asked to have an existing WeChat user verify your identity by scanning a QR code. This is a general WeChat account security measure, not specific to WeChat Pay. If prompted, ask a friend who has used WeChat for 6+ months, or check online communities like r/chinavisa for help. Most users report this step is not always triggered.

Limitations for Foreign Users

Foreign-linked WeChat Pay cannot send/receive red packets, cannot make person-to-person transfers, and cannot receive money from others. For these features, a Chinese bank account is required.

Small-Amount Transactions

For low-value purchases, WeChat Pay generally does not require additional identity verification. You can start making small payments quickly after linking your card, even while full verification is still processing.
